Wet Felting

Felting is a millinery art, it is the oldest form of fabric making known to man.Wet felting is the process by which animal fibres are made into a sheet of non woven fabric through a combination of wetting and agitation. Repeated agitation and compression causes the fibres to stick together into a single piece of fabric wool, it’s main ingredient, is very versatile, soft and durable. And also echo friendly! There are many varieties of wool (Different types of sheep, rabbits, alpaca ) and the hair of camelides (camels, lama, guanaco, etc) can also be used for felting… any hair can be felted!

The animal fibers have a unique surface structure which consists of overlapping scales. These scales when soaked in water open up and latch on to each other creating new formations. This interlocking process is taken one step ahead when agitation is added. To speed up the process soap is added to make the scales slippery, allowing the scales to mix and bond together even better. Once in their new positions, the scales remain locked, creating what we call felt.
Embellishments can be added to the top layer, such as silk fibres , curly wool locks, viscose or silk fabric. As the wool felts together and shrinks, the embellishments, which don’t shrink, start to distorted as the wool pulls them.

Merino Roving is a long and narrow bundle of carded wool, silk fabric, silk hankies, silk thread, viscose, previously felted cords with flowers.

The next stage is felting with soap and water.  Sprinkle well the wool with hot soapy water and start rubbing without too much pressure.

Now it is necessary to begin to roll it up. First, roll gently but increase pressure gradually  and change direction several times.
